How Academic Momentum Is Building in West Philly
At Mastery Shoemaker, early academic gains point to a deeper shift in how the school supports both students and educators. Biology proficiency has doubled in one year, and current projections show the school on track to meet its math goals—strong indicators that new systems and instructional practices are beginning to take hold.
This progress is driven by intentional investments—supported in part by Elevate 215—in tutoring, instructional alignment, and educator support. With tutoring embedded into the school day, data guiding instruction, and growing family engagement, Shoemaker is building the conditions for sustained academic growth.

Addressing the Teacher Shortage in Philadelphia
Philadelphia’s teacher pipeline challenges are significant—but a coordinated, citywide response is tackling the teacher shortage. At a recent convening hosted by the Philadelphia Citywide Talent Coalition and PA Needs Teachers, leaders across education, policy, and workforce sectors highlighted both the scale of the shortage and the growing set of solutions.
From student-teacher stipends and registered apprenticeships to high school career pathways and retention supports, Philadelphia is building a more accessible and sustainable pathway into the profession. Together, these efforts are creating a clearer roadmap for strengthening the educator workforce over the long term.

Highlighting Schools That Inspire Across Philadelphia
Elevate 215’s new Schools That Inspire series is spotlighting schools across Philadelphia that are creating strong conditions for student success. Through features on Philly Schools Compass, the series highlights how schools are strengthening academics, supports, operations, and workforce—while helping families better understand their options.
Each story is rooted in an in-depth school visit and paired with engaging digital content that brings the work to life. By highlighting what’s working across the city, the series empowers families to make informed decisions while fostering shared learning across school communities.
