Statement by Dr. Stacy E. Holland on the Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling

“The Supreme Court ruling yesterday erased my entire professional career. Everyone who has successfully graduated through educational access programs, despite an education system built on inequities, had their histories erased. I am part of a community of individuals who possessed the talent and ability to make a difference in the world, but were denied access to reach their potential by systemic barriers out of our control. Yesterday, we were told we did not deserve to be seen, heard, or given an opportunity to succeed. Yet, here we are today as leaders and contributors to our society.

“The doors that were kicked open for us have just been closed on thousands of current and future students. This is a loud call to action. It is now up to us to make sure our young people know we see them, we care for them, and we will fight for their right to earn an education.

“Elevate 215 believes Philadelphia’s future starts at school because each and every young person has the right to rise to their greatest potential. We are committed to elevating our schools, educators and education systems to provide our students the opportunities they need to thrive in the classroom and in life. But, we cannot do it alone. We need to join together to make it happen. We must demand that legislators work across the aisle to ensure that access programs are restored, expanded, and thrive. The next generation of young people are looking to us; we must not let them down.”

– Dr. Stacy E. Holland, Executive Director of Elevate 215

There is in this world, no such force as the force of a person determined to rise. The human soul cannot be permanently chained.
