School Practices That Work: Closing the Opportunity Gap in Math

Philadelphia families have access to a range of school options, including public district and charter, private, and Catholic schools. Elevate 215 invests in all school types to expand access to quality education and improve outcomes for vulnerable students across the city.

The Independence Mission Schools (IMS) network includes 14 schools serving approximately 4,000 elementary students in the greater Philadelphia area. Among them is St. Rose of Lima in West Philadelphia, which has provided a safe, inclusive learning environment for students of all faiths and cultures for more than 100 years. Today, the school serves over 200 students from Pre-K through 8th grade.

With support from a grant by Elevate 215, St. Rose of Lima has recently transformed its math instruction through innovative programming—resulting in accelerated academic progress for students.

St. Rose of Lima is a shining example of the IMS mission to offer high-quality education that closes the opportunity gap for vulnerable students in Philadelphia. We prioritize creativity and equity through innovative instruction, teacher development, and a strong focus on student growth.

Accelerated Math Opportunities

A standout initiative at St. Rose of Lima is its accelerated math track for high-performing 7th graders, who join the 8th-grade class twice a week to study advanced content. Meanwhile, 8th-grade students follow a dual curriculum that includes both grade-level math and introductory algebra.

This approach not only prepares students for rigorous high school coursework but also gives them a competitive edge in the high school admissions process. Many graduates are accepted into top schools like Shipley, Merion Mercy Academy, Malvern Prep, West Catholic Prep, and Roman Catholic High School—with several earning scholarships.

Data-Driven Results

St. Rose of Lima’s data-informed strategies are paying off. On the Winter NWEA MAP test—a nationally normed assessment that measures student growth—59% of 7th-grade students met or exceeded their growth targets, outperforming the Philadelphia average of 50% for similar populations. Even more notably, 100% of students in the accelerated math program hit their growth goals.

A Network Committed to Excellence

By using student data to drive instructional decisions, St. Rose of Lima is accelerating achievement and preparing students for future success.

Principal Arroyave’s leadership, supported by the IMS network, shows how data-driven, student-centered strategies can lead to real results. St. Rose of Lima is a powerful example that—with research-based practices and targeted support—all students can thrive.
